Global issues of land, power and identity occupy a recurring theme in my practice. Locations include a small industrial town in Canada, the haunted landscape of the American South in Mississippi and a Native American Apache community that survived extinction during the “Manifest Destiny”, as American settlers expanded westward spreading disease and carrying out the violent removal of Native Americans from land they took possession of. My work involves research into socio-political backgrounds that form the foundation of historic references and ultimately inform the contemporary visuals in my work.
Using large and medium format analog cameras, video and sound – my work becomes an open dialogue as engagement with community resides at the core of my practice. The process results in an amalgam of their stories, my story, history, myths, half-truths and competing elements that blur the past and present state of the narrative.
